DAY 13... our eagle returned about midnight again, but perched about 300 yards away atop a tree overlooking the pond below our cliff. At least I didn't have to dodge any payloads last night. We slept til about 10am - giving the kids a chance to catch up a bit and me a chance to wash the bug-smeared van...looks a lot like Huckleberry after a long ride. Last night we had started to notice the haze blowing in from the north - we assumed fires north of Anchorage we'd heard about. Made for a nice sunset, but the smell of smoke was apparent.

Outside of Seward, heading north we get hit with a construction stop for 25 minutes - redoing the roads leading into Seward from Moose Pass. As we cross over the pass, there are several fire trucks at the overlook, watching a fire we can all see about a mile away on the south shore of the Kenai Lake...must be the fire causing the smoke we saw last night. About 30 minutes later we pull back into the Kenai Lake Cabins - same place we stayed at several days ago on our way to Homer.

We're a little early for check-in so head off to he lodge down the way a bit for lunch overlooking the lake. Once again the kids spot a gift shop and run off looking for souvenirs. Tonight Kim and I get a real room, bathroom and all, while the kids get the cabin again. Checkin in with Sandy - the owner of the place, she confirms that her son Cameron will show us where to do our fishing tonight. By this time, the kids and her kids are getting to be friends. Cameron pulls out his potato cannon...a simple little contraption made out of PVC piping and some fittings and a piexo grill lighter. Ya stuff one end with a potato, shoving it it so hard that it cuts a round plug out of the spud as it gets shoved in about 3 feet. Then you unscrew the fitting on the other end - spray 6 seconds of Aqua-Net hair Spray and cap it real quick, screwing in the 4" fitting tight...aim and push the piezo lighter button....this damned thing blew the potato at LEAST 300 feet out over the lake and 100 feet high. Without TV or movies in Cooper Landing, these kids have gotta come up with SOME form of enterntainment, right? ( I did memorize the design and have plans for a new and improved model!

Come 8pm, Cameron's dad gets home from a supply run to Anchorage and we get our poles, waders and bug spray ready for Salmon fishing on the Russian River, near where it runs into the Kenai River. Unfortunately, the Spawing Run is over and very few people are pulling fish. Kim and Kelsey fish for maybe 2 hours - Canden and I aren't interested...I know - I know - come to Alaska and not fish for Salmon? Well.... not gonna pretend to be a fisherman - never did like it. But Camerons little brother Austin is the only one to get one - maybe a 10-12 pound Silver Salmon. He offers it to us to take home, but we let him keep his prize.

On the way back from the Russian River, back to the parking area, we spot a yearling black bear (Pic#11) about 15 yards away in the woods...we've been cautioned about this one several times, seems he lives right here taking advantage of the fishing and wasn't a problem...we snap a few lousy pictures and head on, getting back to the cabin at 12:30 am...still light out, too!

We stay and visit at the tackle shop til 1am (closes at 2am up here during fishing season!) and call it a night...gonna sleep late againa tomorrow for our last day in Alaska.
