The Bracelet...Pt. 6 by Philly
The next morning, I woke up and T was already up sitting by the fire drinking coffee. It was 5:45 am and very cold up there. (My contacts were in a case and the saline had frozen them!) He said the next time I come up there, I should come in June/July but I didn't want to even think about coming back - I wanted to stay!! We huddled up by the fire and he told me a little bit about his earlier years and he was talking like he was getting old or something.
So, I asked him, "just how old are you?" Get this, remember when he and I were at the bar and I told you I figured him to be around 48-50? This brickhouse mountainman told me he was 61 years old, Muthuh!!! Fine example of what living good and good genes can do!! He was so fit!! (and could've fit bet….. uhhh, never mind)
We had another killer day of riding and him showing me this and that and telling me about this and that along the way. We rode to other Ute member's houses and I met them, had some real good stew made with all kinds of wild stuff in it and ended up staying the next night at another Ute's place way up there by a big pond/small lake. We built a huge bonfire, drank, fished, drank, danced, drank, beat on the drums, drank and sang all night long while drinking. Once again - I thought about going home but that didn't last long.
When we got back to T's place the next day, I offered to give him some money and he made me look stupid. He said he takes all these high-rollers up there on packing trips and he takes their money but not mine (or maybe I was making myself look stupid with my little bit of cash). Ohhhhhhhhhh!!! So T's a professional tourguide for real!! What a bum!! No, he had life by the balls!!! No constant in and out with folks like the dude ranches. Just a now and then thing with regulars and some referrals.
I'm terrible with good-bye's. Where I live, it's rare to find people that I'm impressed with and this whole New Mexico/Colorado trip was full of 'em but that's one of the reasons why I do what I do - it's NOT just the ride! I caught him glancing at my bracelet and he said, "have a good ride back" - not the negative of "be careful". But why didn't he say "home" instead of "back"? I think about that all the time. I think I know why. I gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek and rode that long road "back". Back to the bullshit.
Well, it's raining here and this seems like a good way to spend a Sunday. I'm going to go out and check on Patton and Tilly. Tilly's in heat and Patton's loosing his mind cause I don't want them to breed this time. I feel so bad for him - need to stud him out for awhile. Be back in a little bit to blow your mind with the continuation of The Bracelet.
