Glacier, Yellowstone and Sturgis
Wednesday morning July 31, Sioux City, IA. We hit I-29n, stop for breakfast in Sioux Falls, SD then I-90w. Stop again in Pukwana, SD for a break and a cold beer out of the cooler. I bought a soft-sided cooler on the Outer Banks of NC a couple weeks earlier, and I love this thing. It's small but I can stuff a 12 pack, full bag of ice and two big water bottles in it. Temps about 100', but we find a nice big shade tree at a horse stable. We're growing tired of the Interstate so at Chamberlain, SD we head north on hwy 50. No particular reason. We just wanted to get off the beaten path for a while. Glad we did. This starts out along the Missouri River for a little ways. I'm enjoying the scenery and ride so much; I don't even stop for a picture (Dummy).
After going thru Crow Creek Indian Reservation the land flattens out and for miles there are few signs of civilization. This is the South Dakota I've heard so much about. Occasionally we see a mailbox and a dirt road beside it. You look as far as you can see, which is 5 to 6 miles (I know because I checked one stretch of hwy), and you never see the house. Cool. I'm thirsty again in Highmore, SD. A little old lady rides by 3 times looking at us sitting there. I figure if she calls the "Law" it'll take them hours to get out here hehehe. We jump over onto hwy 83 and head for ND.
I have to say the most surprising and interesting thing I've noticed in these small towns in SD and ND is that they all have a "Beer Joint" Pic#01. This one is in Mound City, SD. And man does that Lady running this place talk strange. I'm sure she laughed her ass off at me too. Some of these towns don't even have a gas station, but by-golly they got a Bar. The people may sound funny, but they've got their shit together out here buddy. No dry counties I guess!
That wind blew a cool front in overnight. After 100'+ days we have to leather up for 50's on Thursday. Pic#02 is sitting on top of a hill above the motel. This is the World's Largest Holstein Cow. She is 38' tall, 50' long and weighs in at 12,000 lbs. She is visible for miles to travelers on I-94 near New Salem. "Hey lady, you gotta jump up and pull on them things if ya want milk for the kid." We break off the interstate again and head north on ND hwy 85 running along the east side of the Little Missouri National Grasslands. We stop in Watford City, ND for a late lunch. A retired couple is talking about entertaining thoughts of staying at their summer home here for the 1st time through the winter rather than heading home down south. "Gutsy".
I got Pic#03 by taking a wrong turn out of Williston, ND. Glad I did. This was pretty. We went across the bridge when I realized my screw up. I'm sure your pal David Vance (aka Niles) knows what type bridge this is. I read where he's kinky about bridges hehehe.
I accomplished two things while I took Pic#04. By golly now I can say, "I've seen Montana!" The second was picking up a little North Dakota soil. I'm kinky about dirt. I'll keep a little for myself and sprinkle the rest on my best buddy's grave back home. Pic#05 was taken at Spring Bike Week MB, SC 2000. His name is Randall Lee Duvall and I lost him on August 5, 2000 to an auto accident. I have a big empty spot in my heart, but they say life has to go on. He was my Best Man in our wedding April 5, 1993, and he always wanted to go to Sturgis (a Harley Rider he was and loved by many). Soil from SD, ND, MT and WY will be my way of taking him there. "Love ya Bro and can't wait to see ya again someday!"
Friday morning. (You'll see God's country today Son) We stop in Shelby, MT for a break and I see these three little cuties in Pic#08. They're selling Kool-aid on the corner across from the Exxon station. I just had to go over and make a purchase. They are so precious, and doing a good business too. Life out here appears to be so pleasant. Later girls, and keep those pretty smiles.
For a while now Lori and I've been wondering when we'd start seeing the mountains ahead of us. We've been looking forward to Pics#09,10,11&12 for months. "Dem Dar's Mountains Baby." (Yes Son you're in God's country now) I told Lori that it's so hard to find words to describe just how beautiful this place is. She agreed. We took these pics Friday afternoon on the eastern portion of "Going to the Sun Road". The western portion will come tomorrow. You've just got to come and see this place for yourself to truly be absorbed by it's magnificence. I'm having Multiple Organisms hehehe. I'll shut up now so you can look at some pics.
Yowsa...we're just gonna have to teach you how to take pics of the pretty women, son... you're not allowed to talk about 'em if ya can't show us their pics....
