I'm gonna present this trip in three parts; (CLICK ON DATES FOR LINK TO THAT JOURNAL)
1) June 6-9 ~ Durham to Valley Forge, PA - this is the part with my daughter on the Battlefields.
2) June 10-14 ~ Valley Forge, PA to Lincoln NH, and
3) June 15-19 ~ The Laconia Rally and the ride home.
Part Three: June 15-19, 2005
Wednesday morning, we got up fairly early to ovrcast skys, but no rain in sight...even weather.com said we had a good chance of a dry day through mid afternoon, when the chances of scattered thunderstorms were only 40% at best.
We started out the first 20 miles on the Interstate just to make tracks and get to rally before it got too crowded. We stopped along the way at some lil diner overlooking Squam Lake fro breakfast and continued on to Weir's Beach. It was fairly quiet when we first got there - plenty of parking, maybe 2/3 full, but filling with a steady stream of bikes.
Most of you know I am not a big rally-goer - coming in for the T-Shirt and pin mostly...
But suffice it to say if you closed your eyes, spun around three times and opened 'em again - you might have a hard time knowing what rally you were at - except maybe for seeing Lake Winnepasaukee in the background... they are all the same, same vendors, same general look of the people, same crowds, same traffic.... BAH!
I did get a new pair of riding boots - old ones lasted 14 years and 4 sole replacements. Last time I went to Chang's he looked at me and said, "NO more fixee, too old!" Slammed the boot back on the counter and crossed his arms across his chest defiantly. So I did find a vendor with several styles of 14EEE boots - unusual in itself - and painfully walked around the next dew days in my stiff new boots. On the way back, we stopped off for groceries - steaks and fixin's to grill out on the back porch later that night.
Back at the Condo - nary a drop of rain on any of us, but the sky threatening, we walked along the lil river behind us to the Rec Center, and did the heated pool and Hot Tub thing for a couple hours, getting wet on the walk back to our condo.
The next day, we packed our shit, and pulled out for the leisurely ride back south - going only about 1000 miles to Jaffrey, NH. On the way, we stopped at some little bear park and while they had no scheduled shows that day - this one did come out to pose for us... on the way we also stopped at yet another covered bridge.
In Jaffrey, we stayed at this old Bed and Breakfast called the Benjamine Prescott Inn - nice place but, they had to scrounge up some electric heaters that kept blowing fuses and breakfast was pretty scant. DInner was at Lilly's - a really good meal in an old blackmiths shop.
The next morning David and Jen headed off their own direction to get home as fast as they could - I still had to take Kim back to the Hartford airport on the backroads. Her flight was scheduled for 5pm but there was an earlier flight at Noon, so we got there early, put her on standby and she was successful in getting out on the early flight, so I had a head start on my own haul-ass home. As is typical, though I had a couple days available to get home, I just blew down the Interstate through the worst fuckin' traffic I've ever seen through NYC and got just inside Delaware before I crashed for the night, after drinks at some Irish Pub of course. I got up at 3:30 am to get past Baltimore and Washington, DC before dawn and blew home by 11am. I left the bike fully loaded til later that evening so I could get back to sleep first, and I'm afraid here it is over a week later as I write this and the bugs are still encrusted on Ol' Huck.
Thats it, I'm afraid - Hot, Cold, Rainy, Traffic....got a little of everything. Was another good trip, though - by definition, any bike ride is gonna be a good one. Some are just better than others. This one wasn't one of the better ones, but we had good company and made it back in one piece.
Huck performed perfectly once again - never a missed beat or worry along the way - 2200 miles, leisurely done in 12 days. Great trip with my daughter, wife and friends...and a little solo time in the saddle as well... can't bitch.
Till next time - Ride Safe...
